Modern Languages & Classics

We are a large and diverse department with students and faculty from all around the world, including approximately 240 majors and 650 minors studying Arabic, Chinese, Classical Cultures, French, German, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish.

Most people in the world do not speak English as their native language and the study of world languages and cultures helps us gain a better knowledge of the multicultural modern world in which we live. The Department of Modern Languages and Classics is a gateway to opportunity and success in today’s interconnected world. Mastering another language can enhance employability in a wide range of fields, from business to journalism to healthcare. Just like us, almost every industry today is diversifying linguistically and culturally.

Of course, language and culture studies can also enrich people’s lives outside of the classroom. Modern Languages and Classics faculty are dedicated to helping every learner achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals. We believe small classes are key to helping language students excel in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cross-cultural awareness and communication.

Studying another language or culture helps students to expand their worldview, develop cross-cultural understanding, improve communication skills, enhance self-awareness, and increase employment opportunities. Languages truly open doorways to the world!

Your donations to the Department of Modern Languages and Classics will support us by funding two of our departmental scholarships that are awarded each Spring - the Burkhardt Foreign Language Scholarship, which is awarded to high performing majors in the department, and the Nicole King Scholarship for Foreign Study, which provides financial assistance to majors and minors that will be studying abroad in their junior or senior year.
