BSW Program Celebrates 50 Years

The Department of Social Work at Ball State University is proud to be celebrating our 50th year with an accredited BSW program. The success of our programs would not be possible without our diverse student base, the tireless work of our faculty and staff, and the support of University administrators.

We begin each day with the goal of being a leader in social work education and impacting the social, economic, and environmental vitality of the world. Over the years, you each helped us achieve our fundraising goals that created endowed scholarships for social work legends and helped us meet the need of an ever-changing educational landscape.

You’ve helped us to retain amazing faculty who are creating meaningful experiences for our students.  Here are just a few of the wonderful things our faculty staff and students have been doing recently.

Three Social Work students were named as TOP 100 students who demonstrate excellence above and beyond the community. Congratulations to

  • Sam McCollum, Muncie, Indiana
  • Rose Richert, Huntington, Indiana
  • Frank Diaz Morales, Monon, Indiana

Dr. Mary Provence, assistant professor of social work at Ball State University, spearheaded an Immersive Learning course for students to participate in in partnership with the Muncie Public Library. Students gained valuable experience within their career field while learning the benefit of working to improve community wellness.

Dr. Mary Provence, and BSW students work on their plans for Muncie Public Library.

Angie Dailey, was named Clinician of the Month in October 2024 by the College of Health. Angie is an Assistant Lecturer of Social Work and is being recognized for her dedicated leadership as Clinical Director for the Healthy Lifestyle Center (HLC). Angie manages daily operations, supervises scheduling for the clinic and community events, and manages a staff of eight students who conduct health screenings and health promotion in the community. The Interprofessional Community Clinic annually with their outreach through the HLC had 8,000 encounters with community members in 2024.

Dr. Ronald Dolon, Professor of Social Work, was honored with the Rosalie Wolf Memorial Elder Abuse Prevention Award at the Institute of Violence, Abuse, and Trauma Summit in San Diego, California this past August.

Dr. Jerry Reynolds and MSW Student, Marie Plitt, attended the 10th Annual Alliance of Social Workers in Sports Symposium at Kean University, just outside NYC. Dr. Reynolds currently serves as President of ASWIS and was the conference host. Dr. Reynolds is also working with The Ohio State University, and the Coach Beyond program to support youth sport coaching education in Indiana. They offer free training to youth sport coaches, organizations or schools in the entire state of Indiana.

MSW Student Marie Plitt, and Dr. Jerry Reynolds. Dr. Jonel Thaller is continuing her work with the Addictions Coalition of Delaware County to further the cause of harm reduction for those who are substance users and spread awareness about this concern throughout the community. This is the 6thconference she has been involved in planning since the ACDC was formed. The 2024 conference had 200 attendees and 20 community agencies represented.

Panelists from social service agencies, law enforcement and individuals in recovery answer community questions.

We know that sometimes it’s hard to give, and we are extra thankful for our donors who have given to scholarships, general funds, and supported us over the years. We are grateful to have 50 years of Alumni in practice in the state of Indiana and beyond, and we can’t wait to see what happens next. We hope you will continue to support our faculty, staff and students who are the future of Social Work.
